How to use the art of persuasion in your life

To observe the art of persuasion in real life, it would be interesting to note the antics displayed by Bobby Fischer. Fischer is arguably the greatest chess player who ever lived. Obviously he was the strongest player in his time. But what made him great was not only his playing skills but also his persuasion skills. In Reykjavík, Iceland, 1972, he made headlines all over the world not so much on his superb playing skills but also  on his weird behavior.


He lost the first game when he pushed one of his bishop deep into the enemy's territory, which then got trapped. He then forfeited the second game and threatened to leave Reykjavik immediately. This caused an uproar in the American chess camp. The match organizers went frantic trying to cajole him into staying and continuing to play. 


Basically he complained about:

1. The level of noise in the playing hall. It turned out that the noise came from the main camera that was recording the match.
2. The front spectators were too close to the players. He insisted that at one point he could actually hear a man snoring in the audience.
3. The hall was too warm even after the airconditioning experts verified that the temperature was just right. Maybe it was too cold which explained the 'snoring' above.

As expected, every relevant personnels went frantically to fix the problems. But Fischer continued to complain and even threatened to quit the Championship if playing conditions did not improve. The complaining went on for many more days despite all effort done to rectify the conditions.

Soon after, the Soviet team got the message. Fischer was an eternal complainer. This was possibly done as a  deliberate attempt to put pressure on Spassky so that he(Spassky) would lose focus on the games being played. Much to the disappointments of many spectators and the whole world watching the games LIVE, these antics actually worked. The famous 'poker-faced' Spassky eventually crumbled under the pressure. As the games continued, spectators could clearly see the face that used to show no emotion now became contorted frequently. Even his pace had lost the familiar air of confidence and he could be seen wavering at times.

It became clear that the enigmatic well-mannered Spassky had been brutally torn down psychologically by this savage from the United States. You can conclude that this is an extreme example of using the art of persuasion in the wrong way.
